Komi Choom
Reindeer Herders in Siberia

Visited 2015 and 2016

The Choom (Chum, Tchoom) of the Komi

H3

Compared with the Nenets, the oldest surviving culture to occupy the choom, the Komi are fairly recent, having taken up reindeer herding only some 200 years ago. They have made several adapations to the design, reflecting both different tastes and a different religion. The spirit pole at the back of the tent has been replaces with a pair of poles with the only function being to support the cooking pot, and the general interior is more colourful, decorated with hanging cloths and inner tents.
