This truly iconic masterpiece of African architecture is almost extinct. There is only one complete ring left, one large house standing within a modern compound, and two sites where fragments of the huts can be identified.
They require annual maintenance, and with no tourists visiting the region, due to the threat of activities of boko haram ( I was the first white visitor in four years), there is no economy to support their survival. IoNA is trying to raise funds to build a new ring of huts. This will be the first time in twenty years that one has been constructed, and there is only one old master remaining who has the skills to do this.
We have met the village chief (sultan) who is willing to give some land to the project, we have six young men willing to learn the craft, but we will need resources to pay for time and materials, to get our equipment to theis very remote region, to provide security and accommodation.
We need about $25,000 (£20,000) to mount an expedition. All sponsorship appreciated! There is a possibility that you could join us and learn alongside the locals. Please contact us for more information.
